South Kitchen
PROJECT DETAILS
Remodel Type: Kitchen
Design Style: Contemporary
Clients Favorite Part: Red Backsplash
Before Conditions
- Kitchen was cut off from the dining room and rest of the house
- Too many doorways broke up the room
- Appliances locations didnβt work
- Cabinet doors falling off
Design Solutions
- Closed off a window and a doorway to allow for relocation of appliances
- Opened up wall between kitchen and dining room with a half wall to create a pass through, raised bar counter, and help enlarge the feel of the kitchen
- Relocated range and glass hood to center of the main wall and created a bold focal point with red glass mosaic tile to the ceiling
- Clients selected contemporary finishes as a fun juxtaposition against the style of the rest of this updated farmhouse
THE DETAILS
- Outlets in the cabinets on the dining room side of the bar counter with grommets in the counter to allow them to plug in devices without leaving the doors open
- Microwave drawer unit gives them more available counter space
- Tall cabinets in kitchen on sink wall are notched in the back to wrap around the raised bar counter
- Red Silestone counter top on the bar counter repeats the red glass tile backsplash, while creating a transition from the thick profile white Corian counters in the kitchen

About Colleen

I live in Minneapolis with my landscape architect/urban designer husband, my daughter who believes sheβs my design assistant and sous chef, an independent Siamese, a feisty grey-striped kitten, and a menagerie of turkeys and other wild animals who visit our backyard for the free food. When Iβm not designing, youβll often find me cooking up a Paleo feast, cheering for my daughter's volleyball team, playing pickleball, or hiding in a corner with my nose in a book.
