Remodel Type: Kitchen

Design Style: Transitional

Clients Favorite Part: Efficient layout for cooking

BEFORE CONDITIONS

  • Cabinet drawers were a struggle to open
  • Refrigerator was in the main traffic path into the house and through the kitchen
  • Laminate counters, failing appliances and dated wallpaper
  • Kitchen sink was off center and looked odd
  • Breakfast nook needed an update as well
  • Clients were looking to sell in the next 5 years and wanted a kitchen they could enjoy before they sell that would appeal to future home buyers

DESIGN SOLUTIONS

  • New white cabinetry with a timeless Shaker door style, dark granite counters, and a white subway tile backsplash with a colored grout are classic and fit the look many buyers desire
  • Relocated refrigerator into the main work zone
  • Created a shallow tall pantry where the refrigerator used to be for extra functional storage that wouldn’t impede the flow of traffic
  • Updated lighting and wall finishes in the breakfast nook tie the space together

THE DETAILS

  • Microwave shelf in wall cabinet to keep counters clear
  • Under cabinet LED lighting provides excellent task lighting without heating up the contents of the cabinets above it
  • Plugmold under cabinet outlet stripes remove the need for outlets cluttering up the tile backsplash while providing better spacing between outlets
  • Sink centered under window by utilizing the empty corner space
  • Able to extend the cabinet and countertop at the end of the sink wall to provide a larger work surface and landing zone inside the back door

From The Client

Colleen was recommended to us by our real estate agent, and I must admit that we were a bit leery about working with an interior designer. We had a limited budget, and were concerned about whether we would be listened to. We had lots of ideas, but as two busy professionals, we had no time to flesh out those ideas or research products. We were worried about hiring contractors who would take us for a ride.  As it turned out, there was no reason to worry, because working with Colleen was fabulous! She listened, and developed a kitchen design that perfectly fit the aesthetic of our house. She was prompt, detail oriented, and steered us to products that were classy and fit the budget. She was patient, sensitive, and a pleasure to work with. The remodeling team that she works with were tops, and were at our house every day until the job was done. We couldn’t be more pleased, as we know that kitchen remodels can be a nightmare.  Our kitchen is beautiful and so much more functional to cook in.

About Colleen

I live in Minneapolis with my landscape architect/urban designer husband, my daughter who believes she’s my design assistant and sous chef, an independent Siamese, a feisty grey-striped kitten, and a menagerie of turkeys and other wild animals who visit our backyard for the free food. When I’m not designing, you’ll often find me cooking up a Paleo feast, cheering for my daughter's volleyball team, playing pickleball, or hiding in a corner with my nose in a book.
