Before Conditions

  • Flipper finishes – low-quality wood cabinets and boring granite countertops
  • Galley kitchen with small breakfast table and underutilized storage closet
  • Limited counter space near range due to refrigerator location

Client Objectives

  • Cabinetry in wood tone close to existing built-in cabinet in dining room
  • Increase counter space by range
  • Relocate refrigerator
  • Improve storage functionality

Design Solutions

  • Rift-cut white oak and matte white cabinets, white quartz countertops and a marble-life subway tile backsplash

  • Eliminated storage closet and small hallway closet to inset pantry and refrigerator

  • Relocation of refrigerator allowed range to be centered in opening for more usable counter and cabinet space on both sides

  • Cabinets that extent all the way to the ceiling take advantage of formerly wasted space

The Details That Make It Work

  • The new finishes palette suits their personality and the mid-century details of their home

  • Counter-depth range hood liner that doesn’t break the line of the upper cabinets

  • Large storage drawers include features like a peg system to hold pots in place and a shallow internal pull-out shelf to separate lids from food storage containers

About Colleen

I live in Minneapolis with my landscape architect/urban designer husband, my volleyball & Taylor Swift loving daughter who believes she’s my design assistant, an independent Siamese, a feisty grey-striped kitten, and a menagerie of turkeys and other wild animals who visit our backyard for the free food. When I’m not designing, you’ll often find me cooking up a Paleo feast, cheering for my daughter's volleyball team, playing pickleball, or hiding in a corner with my nose in a book.
