Before Conditions

  • Simple classic finishes with old fixtures that dated the room

  • Compact to a fault, the door swing restricted the layout and movement

  • Radiator took up valuable floor space in this 41 sf full bathroom

  • Storage, counter space, and a quality showering experience were all lacking

Client Objectives

  • Modernize style with classic finishes that fit this 1914 home

  • Relocate fixtures

  • Heated floors

  • Convert swinging door to pocket door

  • Jetted tub and wall hung toilet

Design Solutions

  • Classic subway tile and marble floors are balanced with a modern glass and marble mosaic in the shower niche and a marble-like quartz tub deck

  • New pocket door and removal of radiator allowed relocating of all fixtures

  • New wall hung toilet takes up less floor space and fits under the shower door

  • Console sink with legs is modernized version of a classic while minimizing it’s footprint and enlarging the visual feel of the room

  • Medicine cabinet with integrated lighting provides storage to keep counters clear

  • Marble flooring is cozy underfoot even in the dead of winter with the heated floor system

The Details That Make It Work

  • The air jetted tub is a luxury in a 1914 home

  • Marble, subway tile, and the console sink fit the home’s history while reflecting their modern style

  • New tempered glass window in the shower is frosted for privacy and waterproof with a fiberglass frame and tile edging

  • Bench at end of tub allows for access to tub mechanics from adjacent closet and bonus storage cubby for towels

  • Once the walls were squared, there was not an inch to spare in any direction

About Colleen

I live in Minneapolis with my landscape architect/urban designer husband, my daughter who believes she’s my design assistant and sous chef, an independent Siamese, a feisty grey-striped kitten, and a menagerie of turkeys and other wild animals who visit our backyard for the free food. When I’m not designing, you’ll often find me cooking up a Paleo feast, cheering for my daughter's volleyball team, playing pickleball, or hiding in a corner with my nose in a book.
