MCM meets 2020 Remodel
PROJECT DETAILS
Remodel Type: Kitchen & Dining Room
Design Style: Modern
BEFORE CONDITIONS
- Peninsula with overhead cabinets blocked light and cut off breakfast table from kitchen
- Finishes stuck in the 1970s and 1980s
- Not enough functional counter space for all the small appliances and room to prep
- Range next to the doorway to the dining room was dangerous
- Narrow doorway cut off sight lines to the living room and hallway to bedrooms
- No space for all the paperwork that comes in and out daily with 4 school-aged children and her cookbook collection
DESIGN SOLUTIONS
- Removed peninsula cabinetry
- Created built-in banquette
- Widen archway from the kitchen to landing and living room to improve sightlines and create a connection between the rooms
- Relocated oven and refrigerator to new panty wall
- Relocated cooktop with a real vent hood away from the doorway
- Created appliance pantries with integrated power, lights and quartz counters for easy daily access to key small appliances without cluttering the main counters
- Updated the dining room with new doors for built-ins reusing the original metal inserts in the doors
- Created a drop zone separated from the main kitchen work zone complete with a file cabinet and tech station
THE DETAILS
- Playful mix of colors on-trend with 2019-2020 Color Forecasts (Coral, Navy, True Brown, Grey, Brass/Gold) while still appropriate for this mid-century home
- Appliance pantries – one is the coffee station and the other is the breakfast station, complete with rollouts for breakfast staples
- New modern lighting throughout and new recessed LED lighting for improved zone lighting options throughout the day
- Classic 1960s design integrated into the modern space with inexpensive reproductions of Saarinen Tulip chairs, Saarinen Oval Dining Table, Platner Dining Table, and the modern Ghost Chairs

From The Client
“Colleen was a joy to work with. She calmed my crazy, interpreted my needs and translated my aesthetic to the wonderful crew that she hooked me up with. As a family of 6, we cook a lot. The style was important but functionality was necessary. Colleen took the time to figure out my cooking style; tools and patterns that I use daily. Then she worked within my budget and design style to come up with a truly unique, beautiful, and functional kitchen layout. I would recommend Colleen without hesitation!”

About Colleen
I live in Minneapolis with my landscape architect/urban designer husband, my volleyball & Taylor Swift loving daughter who believes she’s my design assistant, an independent Siamese, a feisty grey-striped kitten, and a menagerie of turkeys and other wild animals who visit our backyard for the free food. When I’m not designing, you’ll often find me cooking up a Paleo feast, cheering for my daughter's volleyball team, playing pickleball, or hiding in a corner with my nose in a book.
