Inspired by the homeowners’ years in Japan and California, as well as their Scandinavian heritage, this 1938 kitchen was reimagined with clean lines, an earthy palette, and purposeful flow. The new design blends rift-cut white oak cabinetry, rosemary green tile, and white quartz counters in a Japandi aesthetic. Form meets function, and modern simplicity honors classic roots.
To unlock better flow, we removed the original breakfast nook, entry closet, and several walls to create clear sightlines and generous work zones. The compact layout now includes ample counter space on either side of the range, a cozy breakfast perch supported by hidden steel supports, and a new arched opening that connects the kitchen and living room. We also widened access to the back door, the family's main entrance, and designed a smart pantry wall with coat storage, a microwave nook, a bench for shoes, and a landing zone for keys and bags. Throughout, arched openings, original trim, and classic lighting soften the modern elements and ground the space in its 1930s charm.
