When this adventurous couple - frequent travelers, dog lovers, and longtime collaborators - invited us back to redesign their new 1978 Woodland home, they were ready to make it truly theirs. We began the remodel the day they closed, taking a phased approach over five years. Phase one brought updates to the den, powder rooms, dining room, and family room. In phase two, we refreshed the primary suite, and finally, phase three focused on a full kitchen remodel, additional den and powder room updates, and a refreshed entry. Though the home had strong bones and a beautiful setting, the original 1970s finishes and segmented layout didn’t reflect the ease and grounded modern style they envisioned.
The kitchen’s footprint worked, but daily frustrations didn’t. We widened key openings to improve flow into the adjacent den and living spaces, reworked appliance zones for function, and removed the infamous “head-bashing” island hood, replacing it with a flush ceiling-mounted vent that lets the design breathe. Horizontal-grain walnut cabinetry brings warmth and movement, while soft gray wall and floor tile, granite counters, and layered lighting offer depth and balance. We tucked a custom banquette into a once-underutilized corner, creating a daily hub for breakfasts, remote work, and weekend rituals - complete with outlets placed just where they’re needed.
In the primary suite, we replaced the cramped tub and shower with a spacious, spa-inspired shower clad in marble-look porcelain. A curbless entry and heated floors offer comfort now and peace of mind for years to come. A redesigned vanity layout, updated lighting, and smart storage bring a sense of ease and refinement to the space. Throughout each phase, every design decision was guided by how this couple lives as we prioritized connection, comfort, and a warm, modern aesthetic that honors the wooded surroundings and supports their daily rhythms.
