Designing Resistance

Community

Like everyone in Minnesota, we’re reeling from the last two months of the violent federal occupation of our state, and finding words to accurately describe it feels impossible. Seeing ICE kidnap, terrorize, and force our Black, indigenous, brown, Asian, and immigrant neighbors into hiding, while they violently murder and attack our community for resisting, has fundamentally changed how we’re moving through the world.

So while this is imperfect, it’s important to us that you know where we stand and the ways we’re showing up for the moment:

In Our Industry

  • The entire interior design industry is supported by immigrants, from painters to plumbers to construction crews. All the beautiful homes we create? Literally couldn’t come to life without immigrant partners. We’re checking in with our GCs and sub-contractors: are their folks safe? Have any team members been abducted? How can we support the families that make up their teams? What precautions can we take to ensure everyone remains safe?
  • We’re also taking collective action to pressure big developers in Minnesota to protect their workers from ICE abduction and intimidation. You can join us by signing onto this letter calling on developers to demand ICE out of Minnesota.

In Our Work

  • As residential designers, we believe home is sacred. So seeing home literally violently attacked deepens our resolve in our work. Home is a sanctuary, a sustaining force in our lives. And everyone has a right to that.
  • You, our clients, are our top priority. We’re working to move projects along with care for everyone’s safety, knowing that we all need home to carry us that much more as we hold our communities with care.

In Our Communities

  • As you all know, the need is still great right now. We’re supporting food pantries, coordinating groceries for our most vulnerable neighbors, organizing at the hyper-local level, and learning how to be Constitutional observers. It’s been a humbling lesson in how we keep each other safe
  • If you’re overwhelmed (we get it – we are too), we’ve found these resources invaluable in how Minnesotans and out-of-state supporters can show up for each other, both in the moment and for the long term.

In Our Lives

  • We’re holding loved ones close, having difficult conversations where needed, getting to know our neighbors, and setting boundaries on everything non-essential right now. It’s a tender time – we’re being gentle on ourselves and others as we all figure this out together. We hope you can too.
  • Even when things are good, you’ve probably heard us talk about nervous system regulation. We’re leaning into that more than ever to support our long-term investment in this struggle. If you’re looking for suggestions, here’s a guide to our favorite nervous system tools

This is normally where we would share photos of pretty interiors, but instead, we’ll leave you with some of the beauty Minneapolis neighbors co-created this week on Lake Nokomis.

If you have more specific questions about how to show up both now and long term, Stephani is highly plugged into this work. Please reach out to her directly at hello@colleenfoxinteriors.com.

Again: we keep each other safe 🧡

In solidarity,
The Fox Interiors Team
