Contractor: The Whisker Group
Shower Tile: Mercury Mosaics
Before Conditions
-
Tiny powder room under the sloped eaves off the owners’ second floor bedroom
-
Wasted hallway space outside the powder room
-
No shower on the second floor
-
Insufficient storage
Client Objectives
-
Add a full bathroom to the second floor to eliminate the need to trapse up and down the stairs to shower and then get dressed
-
Maintain flow through hallway to bedroom while adding a shower and vanity
-
Finishes that work with the style of the home while embracing modern details
-
Incorporate bold mosaic tiles in a unique pattern in the shower for an immersive experience
-
Improve functional storage in both sections of the bathroom
Design Challenges:
-
Tiny closet under the eaves opened and transformed into a generous shower, while leaving space in hallway for flow.
-
Existing hardwood floors were paired with an oak vanity, matched to original trim in the hallway, and a bold shower in a gradient of blues and blue-green tones.
-
Crisp white paneling and cabinetry brighten the small, angular powder room as classic details meet bright blue walls.
-
Major flooring slope issues between the hallway and powder room were handled by installing a tile floor later.
-
Vanity, medicine cabinet, and cabinetry in the toilet room provide storage right where it’s needed.
The Details That Make It Work
-
A custom Mercury Mosaics gradient mosaic shower wall brings the clients’ colorful personalities and love of ceramic art into their owners’ suite.
-
Fun gold hardware and lighting accents modernize the classic elements.
-
Space under the eaves discovered in demo allowed for a larger shower footprint, complete with a bench.
-
A compact sink in the toilet room allows more room to move under the sloped eaves.

About Colleen
I live in Minneapolis with my landscape architect/urban designer husband, my volleyball & Taylor Swift loving daughter who believes she’s my design assistant, an independent Siamese, a feisty grey-striped kitten, and a menagerie of turkeys and other wild animals who visit our backyard for the free food. When I’m not designing, you’ll often find me cooking up a Paleo feast, cheering for my daughter's volleyball team, playing pickleball, or hiding in a corner with my nose in a book.
