Before Conditions

  • Dark woodwork, brick wall, and swagged window treatments distracted from the generous floor plan and views of the lake

  • Lacked sufficient seating for larger gatherings

  • Glass coffee table bounced light from the lake into your eyes

  • Overscaled furniture swallowed you and was no longer comfortable

  • Owner’s Bedroom sitting area, dresser, lighting and nightstands didn’t fit with new bedframe

Client Objectives

  • Updated lighter and brighter palette in a transitional style that fit with existing carpet

  • Seating for gatherings of 6-8

  • Warm and inviting feel

  • Updated transitional furniture for bedroom

Design Solutions

  • Palette of soft greens, blues and creams complement the views outside

  • Brick on fireplace and piano wall were painted to brighten the room and a new mantle and fireplace surround modernize the fireplace

  • Increased seating with a pair of swivel chairs and a pair of accent chairs that can easily be moved around

  • New modern floral stationary curtains and valance draw attention to the view outside without distracting from it

  • New lounge chair with floor lamp and accent table that will actually be used

  • Nightstands offer concealed storage and improved lighting for reading in bed

The Details That Make It Work

  • It is now an inviting gathering space for study groups and dinner parties

  • The warm and earthy palette now flows cohesively with the updates in their adjacent breakfast room and kitchen

  • Built-in cabinets were updated with cream enamel and a subtle grasscloth wallcovering behind the open shelves. Original unique brass hardware pops against the new finishes

  • A mix of metals and marble on accent tables in a mix of transitional and modern styles brings playfulness

About Colleen

I live in Minneapolis with my landscape architect/urban designer husband, my daughter who believes she’s my design assistant and sous chef, an independent Siamese, a feisty grey-striped kitten, and a menagerie of turkeys and other wild animals who visit our backyard for the free food. When I’m not designing, you’ll often find me cooking up a Paleo feast, cheering for my daughter's volleyball team, playing pickleball, or hiding in a corner with my nose in a book.
