Before Conditions

  • Floor space was restricted by a closed off back entry within the kitchen

  • Baseboard radiators limited placement of cabinetry and furniture

  • Insufficient storage and counter space

  • Breakfast table had to serve as work prep space as well as compact seating area

  • Soffits and two different ceiling heights made the room feel smaller

  • Dark cabinetry, worn linoleum, and vintage appliances that didn’t always work

Client Objectives

  • Open up the flow to allow cooking and gathering without feeling cramped

  • Seating for casual meals

  • Ensure all finishes are appropriate for this 1908 Home with classic bones

  • Bright cabinetry, colorful accents, and durable finishes

Design Solutions

  • Walls around back entry and soffits were removed, ceiling height leveled.

  • Refrigerator was relocated to the opposite wall with a new pantry.

  • Wall oven and cooktop were replaced with a range, allowing for more counter space on either side of it.

  • Shallow built-ins added by back door to maximize square footage with storage for shoes and everyday essentials.

  • Bright white classic shaker style cabinets and durable light grey LVT flooring balance the deep tones of the quartz counters and dark aquamarine backsplash.

  • Baseboard radiators were replaced with electric toe kick heaters

  • The trim was matched to the existing profiles in the rest of the home

The Details That Make It Work

  • The narrow island with a butcher block counter not only serves as prep space, seating space and storage, but it’s also freestanding to allow it to be moved under the windows if needed.

  • Added quick access to their extensive spices collection with both a pullout next to the hood and a drawer organizer

About Colleen

I live in Minneapolis with my landscape architect/urban designer husband, my daughter who believes she’s my design assistant and sous chef, an independent Siamese, a feisty grey-striped kitten, and a menagerie of turkeys and other wild animals who visit our backyard for the free food. When I’m not designing, you’ll often find me cooking up a Paleo feast, cheering for my daughter's volleyball team, playing pickleball, or hiding in a corner with my nose in a book.
