Before Conditions

  • Dark oak cabinets, bold 1970s tile, and vinyl flooring trapped the rooms in the past

  • The general layout was fine, but oddly placed elements like the ovens impeded the work flow in the kitchen

  • Insufficient seating for family meals

Client Objectives

  • Elevate style with finishes and furnishings in a warm modern palette with playful accents

  • Create a unified aesthetic for connecting rooms

  • Establish a bar zone in the family room for easy entertaining

  • Kids are older…. Time to invest in quality furnishings and finishes!

  • Update the powder room with better lighting that guests will appreciate

Design Challenges:

  • New easy to maintain flooring provides a visual flow from the entry through the family room.

  • Three coordinated finishes break up the large expanse of kitchen cabinetry

  • Light grey upper cabinets, white quartz counters and a stacked white tile backsplash keep the kitchen bright and cheerful

  • Deep navy walls and a rich and cozy array of soft textiles in the Family Room create a relaxed mood for sinking in and curling up

  • Finishes throughout were chosen with the dogs and teenagers in mind

  • The ovens were relocated out of the main work area to allow for larger prep zones

  • Bar storage in the Family Room features a wine refrigerator and closed storage for easy access with less visual clutter

  • Powder Room feels welcoming and flattering with bright lighting and modern finishes

The Details That Make It Work

  • Thanks to the improved seating and finishes throughout, the homeowners are proud to host events from small dinners to graduation parties with ease and style.

  • New dining table in kitchen expands with a clever hidden leaf to accommodate

  • Last minute social gatherings

  • The kitchen desk was eliminated while file drawers and a charging drawer were integrated into the main cabinetry, providing functional storage for today’s needs.

  • A roll out drawer under the bar sink serves as a convenient spot for liquor storage

  • The homeowners’ vintage metal accent chairs were reupholstered in a bold orange to combine family history with a new playful vibe

  • Eliminated a daily pain point by replacing the divided window over the sink with a single pane window, offering an expanded backyard view

About Colleen

I live in Minneapolis with my landscape architect/urban designer husband, my daughter who believes she’s my design assistant and sous chef, an independent Siamese, a feisty grey-striped kitten, and a menagerie of turkeys and other wild animals who visit our backyard for the free food. When I’m not designing, you’ll often find me cooking up a Paleo feast, cheering for my daughter's volleyball team, playing pickleball, or hiding in a corner with my nose in a book.
