Before Conditions

  • Classic pale pink 1950s tile lined all of the walls, creating a time warp

  • Vanity cabinet lacked functional space

Client Objectives

  • Modernize style with nods to the mid-century style of this 1950s home

  • Keep existing footprint and update with modern amenities

Design Solutions

  • Removed bump out by vanity to allow a larger vanity with plenty of drawer storage

  • Fresh and bright palette of white wall tile, gray floors and a warm walnut vanity refreshes the space

  • Added a bidet and grab bars to allow the owner Aging in Place flexibility

The Details That Make It Work

  • The size and stacked installation of the wall tile references the design of the fireplace surround in the adjacent living room

  • The original glass panel providing privacy for the toilet zone was reused and framed out with minimal trim fitting the updated design

  • Found new knobs that match the original hardware to carry the mid-century history into the new era

About Colleen

I live in Minneapolis with my landscape architect/urban designer husband, my daughter who believes she’s my design assistant and sous chef, an independent Siamese, a feisty grey-striped kitten, and a menagerie of turkeys and other wild animals who visit our backyard for the free food. When I’m not designing, you’ll often find me cooking up a Paleo feast, cheering for my daughter's volleyball team, playing pickleball, or hiding in a corner with my nose in a book.
