Before Conditions

  • The original finishes were in good condition but didn’t fit their aesthetic after 20 years in the home

  • The living room was cut off from the kitchen

  • The small, awkwardly shaped island didn’t allow for seating or sufficient storage

  • Desk and pantry space weren’t optimized for their storage needs

Client Objectives

  • Warm modern palette with new flooring throughout

  • Remove wall between kitchen and living room to allow for a larger island with seating and improved connection for entertaining

  • Better storage

  • Updated lighting throughout

Design Solutions

  • With the wall removed between the living room and kitchen, the flow between the rooms allows more options for everyday living and entertaining

  • The enlarged island has plenty of storage for cooking prep and seating for 4

  • New wall of pantry cabinets allow for the microwave and other small appliances to stay off the counters yet remain easily accessible

  • Gray shaker cabinets on the perimeter and the navy island each have a different easy to maintain quartz counter and tie in with the existing living room furniture palette

  • New luxury vinyl plank flooring unite the living room, dining room and kitchen

The Details That Make It Work

  • Living room furniture was rearranged, with a new area rug to anchor it, to allow TV watching from both rooms when entertaining

  • Custom walnut beam mantel and tile surround refresh the double sided fireplace

  • Wood and leather details on the black pendant lights are a departure from the typical glass pendants seen in kitchen remodels

  • The black ring chandelier in the entry pops against dark navy walls, repeating the black and navy accents from the kitchen

About Colleen

I live in Minneapolis with my landscape architect/urban designer husband, my daughter who believes she’s my design assistant and sous chef, an independent Siamese, a feisty grey-striped kitten, and a menagerie of turkeys and other wild animals who visit our backyard for the free food. When I’m not designing, you’ll often find me cooking up a Paleo feast, cheering for my daughter's volleyball team, playing pickleball, or hiding in a corner with my nose in a book.
