Client Objectives

  • Transform this 1978 owners’ suite into a calm modern retreat.

  • Introduce neutral, classic modern finishes to fit with updates made throughout the rest of the home.

  • Replace cramped shower stall with an expansive shower that meets their aesthetic and functional needs.

  • Update the bedroom with new lighting, color palette, and blackout curtains for privacy and a good night’s sleep.

Design Challenges:

  • Bold patterned tile and colored plumbing fixtures overpowered the rooms.

  • Creating a curbless shower required modifying the subfloor for proper drainage while accommodating the height needed for heated floors.

Design Solutions:

  • Replaced a tub and shower stall with one expansive shower featuring 24×48″ porcelain wall tiles that mimic the look of marble slabs.

  • Updated vanity configuration to provide more functional storage.

  • Added radiant in-floor heating in the shower room along with a curbless shower transition for long term accessibility and seamless flow.

  • Installed LED-lit mirrors for optimal lighting over the vanity, while medicine cabinets provide quick access to everyday essentials.

The Little Details That Make It Work

  • Acrylic pulls to match the original acrylic accessories salvaged from the original 1978 design.

  • The frosted band across the entire glass shower wall offers privacy while allowing plenty of daylight in.

  • Roll-out shelves in each sink base maximize storage accessibility.

  • New linen cabinets take full advantage of a wasted corner, providing functional storage where it’s needed.

  • Rain showerhead and handheld were carefully placed to fit each homeowner’s preferences.

About Colleen

I live in Minneapolis with my landscape architect/urban designer husband, my daughter who believes she’s my design assistant and sous chef, an independent Siamese, a feisty grey-striped kitten, and a menagerie of turkeys and other wild animals who visit our backyard for the free food. When I’m not designing, you’ll often find me cooking up a Paleo feast, cheering for my daughter's volleyball team, playing pickleball, or hiding in a corner with my nose in a book.
